Eco-Conscious Parenting

August 16, 2020 Kate Wainwright
Copy of Hello!.jpg

Hopefully many of you will be aware that my business ethos is ethical jewellery created using recycled silver and gold with a low-waste production journey and responsibly sourced tools and materials. This is an ethos I endeavour to live by.

So here is something a little different from my usual blog content, recently on Instagram stories I asked if anyone would be interested in seeing how I try to carry my eco-friendly ethos through to parenting and the response was a unanimous yes. Shortly after I thought, why did I ask that?! Running a small business, raising a small human, looking after two furballs and trying to keep the house standing is challenging enough without adding a further series of blog posts to my to-do list on top of that! But then I also thought that this also shows making environmentally conscious changes does not have to be time consuming (unless you decide to blog about it hah!). While I have no plans to begin a mummy blog I know there are lots of people out there curious about ways in which they can reduce the environmental impact of parenting so if by sharing some of the small steps in my journey so far I can help start a conversation and plant some seeds for other parents then that to me is phenomenal!

When I was pregnant with my first son Iver a lovely friend and I were having a conversation around saving the planet or something similar and she said to me 'you do realise having a baby is the least eco-friendly thing you can do?!’. A bit blunt but she had a very valid point. I knew that I wanted to make choices on my parenting journey that are kind to the planet and hope to raise a child who grows up knowing the importance of looking after his home (brick and mortar home as well as the planet) and treating it with respect so choices such as home grown veg, cloth nappies, home cooked food and so on were a no-brainer for me.

I would like to point out, I am aware that I am far from perfect - this is a learning journey and I'll always strive to do better but I also feel so strongly this should be an open and honest conversation to make it achievable for everyone - we don't need to be perfect eco warriors but we do need to try to do what is achievable for us which also leads me on to what is achievable to some of us is not for others so comparisons, judgement and guilt have no place here, only positive and friendly suggestions please.

I'm planning to start by sharing a series of posts on my eco-friendly journey with my own life and with parenting. Ill be starting with sharing my cloth nappy journey next week (may be delayed dependant on how busy life is!) - so if you have any questions feel free to hit me up and I'll try and answer them in next week's post!

Likewise I am always looking for suggestions how I can improve my journey - get in touch if you have any ideas for me or if you fancy taking over my blog and sharing your eco-parenting journey here too, I would love to hear from you!

If you have read this far - thank you and well done! I hope my fellow brits are enjoying some relief from that scorching heat and worldwide readers are staying safe.
